FAQ LTE

What is LTE?
"LTE" stands for "Long Term Evolution". LTE is a cellular wireless technology and is the standard which succeeds UMTS/3G. For this reason, LTE is often described as "4G".

How fast is LTE?
In theory LTE supports data rates up to 300 Mbps in the download direction and 75 Mbps in the uplink direction. Effectively, download rates up 100 Mbps and upload rates up to 50 Mbps are possible. This compares to the previous cellular standard HSPA+ with up to 21 Mbps.

What advantages does LTE offer compared to other cellular networking standards?
The significantly higher transmission speeds provide ample bandwidth for complex online applications that previously required a wired connection. Due to its lower latency period, LTE supports, for example, wireless Internet video telephony, the exchange of larger volumes of data, or mobile online gaming. The cellular wireless technology used by LTE can also take high-speed Internet to locations without a wired DSL connection.

Which radio frequencies does LTE operate with?
In Germany and many other European countries, LTE is transmitted over 800 MHz and 1800/2600 MHz. Due to its high range, the 800 MHz variant is an ideal alternative to DSL in rural areas without broadband access. LTE based on the 1800 and 2600 MHz frequencies has been optimized for city centers and areas with high user density (fairs, sport events).

Which LANCOM devices already support LTE?
With the LANCOM 1781-4G, the LANCOM 1781A-4G, and the LANCOM 1780EW-4G, LANCOM offers a complete portfolio of business VPN routers that support high-speed LTE. For an improved signal reception, you can install our LTE antennas AirLancer I-360-4G and AirLancer O-360-4G.

What advantages do I have from operating a LANCOM LTE router?
LANCOM routers are a true "last mile" alternative for companies operating at sites without wired broadband Internet access. They provide professional, high-security site connectivity via 5 simultaneous IPSec VPN channels (optionally 25 channels) and an object-oriented stateful inspection firewall. You have full control over your network with the free software package LCMS and its extensive management and monitoring functions. Optional web content filtering blocks access to inappropriate web sites and a GPS receiver offers an integrated anti-theft device. And you can improve signal reception by installing an external LTE antenna (e.g. the LANCOM I-360-4G). On top of that, LANCOM LTE routers are fully backwards compatible with 2G and 3G standards. Hence, they offer high connection stability and a forward-looking technology.
