If a request cannot be answered using the DNS tables, the DNS server forwards the request to further DNS servers. This process is called DNS forwarding.
A distinction is made between
- Special DNS forwarding Requests for specific name spaces are forwarded to specific DNS servers.
- General DNS forwarding All other unspecified names are forwarded to the "higher-level" DNS server.
